Undergraduate Education

According to the concept of “Beyond Pharmacy, Around Pharmacy and For Pharmacy”, we have been carrying out the construction of pharmacy-related interdisciplinary programs, and trying to follow the strategy of “building key programs from the priority ones and establishing brand programs from the new ones”. We now have 26 undergraduate programs and 5 higher-vocational programs, recruiting 3000 students annually.

Our university now has 2 national bases for bringing up talented people, 5 construction stations of national special programs, and 3 pilot programs for national comprehensive reform. 18 programs have been approved to be brand and special programs at the provincial level, provincial key programs, and brand programs of universities in Jiangsu of the 13th Five-year Plan. We also have a Sino-foreign joint program. About 73% of our undergraduate programs are brand, special and key ones at or above the provincial level. We have been carrying out the undergraduate teaching reform centering on “reinforcing three disciplinary foundations, providing three practical experiences and cultivating three professional abilities”, and carrying out many “research-oriented” and “application-oriented” reform projects of talent cultivation model, including “the training plan of top pharmaceutical talented people” and “the training plan of outstanding pharmaceutical engineers”. Since 2000, we have been awarded the first prize of national teaching achievements for three consecutive sessions.

Our graduates have been extensively applauded by employers due to their “solid foundation, strong practical ability, rigorous style and strong sense of social responsibility”. The employment rate of our graduates has been remaining over 99% for many years, ranking at the top of the list of universities directly subordinated to the Ministry of Education. During the national appraisal of first-level disciplines, both the scores of the talent cultivation indexes of our 2 disciplines (Pharmacy and Traditional Chinese Pharmacy) ranked the first nationwide. The score of the first-level index of “talent cultivation” of our pharmacy discipline has been ranking the first nationwide for 12 consecutive years.

Postgraduate Education
Our university is one of the first institutions of higher learning that were authorized to confer doctoral and master’s degrees. Early in 1955, our university began to recruit and cultivate associate-doctoral post-graduates according to the model of the former Soviet Union. In 1978, we began to recruit master degree candidates in such four disciplines as medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, pharmaceutical analysis and pharmacognosy. In November 1981, we set up doctoral stations in such two disciplines as medicinal chemistry and pharmacognosy upon the approval of the State Council, which began to recruit doctoral candidates in 1984. In 1988, our university began to recruit overseas master degree candidates. In 1992, we began to recruit overseas doctoral degree candidates. In 1988, we launched the master degree program for  in-service staff with the same educational level as post-graduates upon the approval of the Academic Degree Committee of the State Council. In June 1991, we set up the post-doctoral research stations of pharmacology upon the approval of the Ministry of Human Resources. In November 1992, the first post-doctoral researcher entered our post-doc research station. In 2007, we set up the postdoctoral research stations of Traditional Chinese Pharmacy.

Our university now has two doctoral degree conferring stations of first-level disciplines including Pharmacy and Traditional Chinese Pharmacy, five master degree conferring stations of first-level disciplines including pharmacy, traditional Chinese pharmacy, chemistry, biology and biomedical engineering, 24 doctoral degree conferring stations of second-level disciplines and 36 master degree conferring stations of second-level disciplines. Our disciplines cover such categories as medicine, science, engineering, management and law, developing from single disciplinary category to multiple disciplinary categories. At the end of the “11th Five-Year-Plan” period, our university set up five new professional degree conferring stations including master degree of pharmacy, traditional Chinese pharmacy, engineering (pharmaceutical engineering), applied statistics and public administration, having not only achieved the parallel development of academic and applied talent cultivation, but also a more rational and well-balanced structure of postgraduate education. Since 2013, pharmacology and toxicology, chemistry and clinical medicine have entered the top 1% in ESI ranking.

Our university now has 157 PhD. supervisors and 338 master supervisors. The cultivation scale of post-graduates of our university has been expanded substantially. By the end of September 2015, we had conferred 1647 doctoral and 7476 master’s degree certificates.
