Global Conference on Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Education Held in Nanjing

November 7-8,2016: The first Global Conference on Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Education was hosted by the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) and the Chinese Pharmaceutical Association (CPA), organized by China Pharmaceutical University and the Association of American College of Pharmacy. The conference was held in Purple Palace Hotel in eastern suburbs of Nanjing. More than 500 representatives from Canada, Japan, Australia, France, India and other 47 countries and regions attended the conference. The theme for discussion was "To establish a global vision for global pharmaceutical practitioners." CPU Party Secretary Hui XU, President Maode LAI, Vice President Wenbing YAO, Vice President Lingyi KONG and other school leaders, experts and scholars attended the meeting.


At the opening ceremony, Xianze SUN, Vice Minister of the State Food and Drug Administration of China, congratulated the convening of the Global Pharmaceutical Education Conference. He said that drug safety is not only the responsibility of regulatory departments, production departments, medical institutions, retail pharmacies, but also experts and scholars, industry, media and society as a whole. The International Pharmaceutical Federation, as the most professional international organization in the field of global pharmaceutical industry, hopes to further strengthen cooperation and exchanges with China to actively promote the innovation and development of pharmacy, explore the way of sustainable development, work together to create a better future for mankind. 


Peng ZHAO, Vice Chairman of Jiangsu Provincial People's Congress Standing Committee, congratulated the conference on behalf of the Jiangsu Provincial Government. He said that pharmaceutical education undertakes the important task of providing talent and intellectual support for the development of pharmacy, and has basic support for new drug development and clinical rational drug use. Jiangsu Province boasts rich talent pool in pharmaceutical education, industry and resources. The conference being held in Jiangsu was the decision by International Pharmaceutical Federation and the Chinese Pharmaceutical Association, and the decision not only serves as an acknowledgement of the achievements made by Jiangsu's pharmacy practitioners, educators and industry, but also promotes mutual understanding and cooperation between Jiangsu and foreign pharmacy practitioners. 


Prof. Philip SCHNEIDER, Co-chair of the conference and Vice President of the College of Pharmacy of the University of Arizona, gave a brief account of the conference agenda. Carmen Peña, President of the International Pharmaceutical Federation, paid tribute to the Chinese Pharmaceutical Association and China Pharmaceutical University for their work in this conference.


Prof. Guowei SANG, Academician, President of the Chinese Pharmaceutical Society and President of the State Councilor said in his speech that this conference is a major event of Chinese pharmaceutical industry and a milestone in the history of world pharmaceutical education. He introduced the current situation of Chinese pharmaceutical education and hoped that through the exchange and cooperation of this conference, the Chinese traditional culture, including traditional Chinese medicine, could be promoted to the world, so that the whole world could share in China's pharmaceutical products, services, education and related scientific achievements.


On the morning of November 7, a number of pharmaceutical experts, scholars, practitioners and government officials from Switzerland, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and other countries and regions organized two thematic academic reports and symposium around the themes of Global Pharmacy Practitioners: Better Education through Education and Target to Meet the Demand: FIP Pharmaceutical Practitioners' development goals. 


The first Global Conference on Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Education is one of the core activities of the International Pharmaceutical Federation's 5-year Pharmacy Education Action Plan, and is also the heavyweight academic activity of the 80th Anniversary of China Pharmaceutical University as the organizer. In addition to the first Global Pharmaceutical Education Conference, the conference also held two pharmaceutical education forums, the 2016 Higher Pharmaceutical Education Seminar and International College Students Drug Forum.


The conference focused on the theme of Building a Global Perspective for Global Pharmaceutical Practitioners, which aims to bring together leaders in the field of pharmacy worldwide, to identify the current state of global pharmaceutical education, to clarify what is ideal pharmaceutical education, and to draw an Ideal Pharmacy Education Circuit Diagram and Strategies to overcome difficulties. Three documents namely Global Consensus of Experts in Pharmaceutical Education in Nanjing, Global Vision of Pharmaceutical Practitioners and Pharmacy Practitioners' Development Goals were discussed and adopted, as the programmatic documents for global guidance and promotion of pharmaceutical education reform.


During the meeting, committee members of Ministry of Education and Secretary-General of FIP also made a special trip to visit CPU student volunteers and the CPU booth.
