Xu Guojun (November 17, 1922 - June 17, 2005) Male, Han nationality, Changshu, Jiangsu Province. He was a pharmacologist and pharmacy educator, and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He graduated from the National Pharmaceutical College in 1945 and stayed in the college to teach. He has been the director of the teaching and research room, the head of the department, the director of the Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and the chief leader of the key disciplines of pharmacology and Chinese medicine in Jiangsu Province. He is also a member of the Discipline Review Group of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, an invited examiner of the Invention Review Committee of the State Science and Technology Commission, a member of the Medicine Review Committee of the State Science and Technology Commission Progress Prize, and an executive director of the International Society of Chinese Herbal Medicine (Japan). He is a professor, doctoral supervisor, deputy director of the Academic Degree Committee, deputy editor-in-chief of the Journal of China Pharmaceutical University, and honorary member of the National Pharmacopoeia Committee.
He presided over the systematic research project on homonym varieties of Chinese herbal medicines, which won the third prize of National Scientific and Technological Progress. He presided over the national key science and technology research project on the collation of varieties of commonly used Chinese herbal medicines and the quality research project, and completed the research on 110 major categories of herbal medicines. The research on this topic has many innovations and discoveries, which is an initiative in the history of the development of traditional Chinese medicine, and has made positive contributions to the scientificization, standardization and internationalization of traditional Chinese medicine. Its results have been awarded the first and third prizes of National Scientific and Technological Progress. He has published 49 monographs, textbooks and teaching reference books and more than 330 academic papers. He has trained 40 masters and 28 doctors. He was awarded the honorary title of Advanced Worker of Nanjing, Advanced Worker of National Pharmaceutical and Health Science Conference, Model Worker of National Pharmaceutical System, Advanced Worker of National Higher Education Institutions, Outstanding Discipline Leader of Jiangsu Universities, and Advanced Individual of Spiritual Civilization of Nanjing. He was also awarded the Special Honorary Award of Gifu Pharmaceutical University in Japan, and the Chapter America Research and Teaching Award in the U.S.A. In 2001, he was awarded the Special Contribution Award of the China Pharmacy Development Award, the Ho Leung Ho Lee Award for Progress in Science and Technology, and the Collective Award for Outstanding Scientific and Technological Achievement of the Seekers Science and Technology Foundation.
